Clear the Clutter, Clear the Mind

Research shows that clutter can influence our cognition, relationships and well-being. A study published in the Journal of Neuroscience found clearing the clutter resulted in a better ability to focus and process information. A study by Cornell University found background clutter led people to be less likely to interpret facial expressions, which can negatively affect relationships. And, a study from the University of Greece found people with a chronically cluttered home had constant low-grade flight or fight response which kept them in a state of stress. Clearing your clutter can help to improve your overall well-being
Clutter can be categorized into various types, including physical, digital, emotional, spiritual and mental clutter.
- Physical clutter refers to physical objects that accumulate and create a sense of disorganization in homes, garages or workspaces.
- Digital clutter involves files, emails and digital media that create a distraction from responsibilities.
- Emotional clutter pertains to unresolved emotions or relationships that cause mental strain, mood swings or emotional exhaustion.
- Spiritual clutter refers to a lack of alignment with one's values and beliefs or feeling disconnected from a sense of purpose. These may lead to feelings of emptiness, confusion and a sense of being unfulfilled.
- Mental clutter refers to excessive thoughts, worries and information overload that can lead to stress, anxiety and difficulty focusing.
While everyone is not affected by clutter in the same way, if it bothers you, it’s time to address it.
This may mean asking friend or family for help or hiring a professional. For non-physical clutter, you may employee practices, such as mindfulness, journaling and engaging in self-care activities. By decluttering you can create a healthier and more balanced overall well-being.
