In the United States, 1.5 million people are affected by Parkinson’s disease. It’s a motor system disorder caused by a progressive deterioration of dopamine in the brain. This often leads to notable symptoms such as resting tremors, stiffness, and loss of balance. Parkinson’s isn’t fatal but can be the source of long-term physical and financial strain. On average, individuals spend an additional $12,000 on medical expenses with an annual economic burden of $14.4 billion. Thankfully, there are organizations that help provide affordable programs and services specific to the unique needs of people diagnosed with Parkinson's. The 2019 Everybody vs Parkinson’s Gala will benefit two exceptional forces in this fight—the Kirk Gibson Parkinson’s Foundation and the Michigan Parkinson Foundation. The Kirk Gibson Foundation was initially created in 1996 to provide college scholarships for students. Nine years later, the focus expanded to include Parkinson’s research and awareness following Gibson's own diagnosis in 2015. The Michigan Parkinson’s Foundation was founded in 1983 with the similar goal of increasing education and research. Yet, its efforts are all-inclusive as they benefit individuals with Parkinson’s as well as their loved ones, caregivers, and physicians. Funds raised during the Everybody vs Parkinson’s Gala will help each organization continue working within their communities and beyond. Dan Loepp, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan President and CEO, and his wife Amy Leopp, will co-chair the event, which will consist of a VIP reception, silent auction, strolling dinner, dancing, and live entertainment.
