Winter can be a challenging time for a variety of factors, including the potential of slipping and falling on ice. But, with a little planning and preparation, there are ways to support physical and mental well-being during the cold season.
Here are some tips for being proactive this winter when it comes to your physical and mental health:
- Stay active and engage in regular physical activity to maintain mobility and strength.
- Maintain a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
- Stay socially connected with family and friends through phone calls, video chats or face-to-face connections.
- Exercise the mind with crossword, jigsaw and logic puzzles, and reading.
- Ensure you’re up to date with vaccinations, including the annual flu shot.
- Dress appropriately to enjoy some fresh air and sunshine, or spend most of your day in the brightest areas of your home.
Falling is a common concern during the winter, but many falls can be prevented. Below are some tips to help reduce the chances of a fall-related accident during winter:
- Wear boots and shoes that fit properly and have soles with good traction.
- Ensure your clothes aren’t so long they could be a tripping hazard.
- Slow down and give yourself extra time to get where you’re going.
- Make sure steps leading into your home have sturdy handrails that can support you.
- Clear snow from your porch, walkways and driveway, or hire someone to do it.
- Watch for slippery surfaces ahead of you — keep your head up and use your eyes to look down.
- Be extra careful when walking in more than an inch of snow — deeper accumulations can cause you to trip.
- Focus on physical activity, balance and strength.
- Watch for tripping hazards in your home, such as blankets, area rugs, cords and pets.
- Ensure proper lighting inside and outside of your home.
- Ask family, friends or community organizations for help, when necessary.
