Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Accepting Nominations for 27th Annual Community Service Awards

DETROIT, May 2, 2017 – Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is accepting nominations for its 27th annual Community Service Awards to recognize those individuals and organizations that act as outstanding senior citizen advocates throughout the state. The awards will be presented on August 11 at the kick-off ceremony for the 2017 Michigan Senior Olympics, sponsored by Blue Cross. In addition to being recognized, each award recipient will receive a contribution of $1,000, payable to the non-profit organization of his or her choice. Blue Cross awards three Community Service Awards for senior advocacy; two for individual accomplishment and one for organizations. The Claude D. Pepper Award is given to two individuals – a retiree volunteer over 55 years of age and another person of any age who is employed in the senior advocacy field – whose work reflects an ongoing dedication to improving the lives of older adults in Michigan. Last year’s recipients were Denise Hubbard of Waterford and Raymond Mills of Bellaire. Hubbard was recognized for devoting hundreds of volunteer hours each year to improving the lives of seniors by providing free education classes on nutrition, Alzheimer’s care and injury prevention, among other contributions. Mills was awarded for over 19 years of senior service through education programs and the development of a walking path, bingo and a weekly farmers market, in addition to other senior activities within the community. Recognizing an exceptional community-based organization, the Senior Advocate Award is presented to a group that provides seniors with health or social services assistance. Last year, Community Social Services of Wayne County was presented with the Senior Advocate Award for providing meaningful opportunities for seniors to share their skills, knowledge and experience with residents of Detroit and Wayne County. “Blue Cross is dedicated to the everyday care and well-being of Michigan seniors,” said Suzanne Miller Allen, director of Community Responsibility for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. “We’re thrilled to recognize those throughout the state who go above and beyond to ensure seniors across Michigan are provided with basic needs and services.” The deadline for nominations for the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Community Service Awards is Friday, June 9.
