The holiday season is the perfect opportunity to prioritize important health conversations with friends and family — this is something I have encouraged throughout my nearly 20 years as President and CEO of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.
As we come together, taking a few moments to check in on our loved ones’ health can make a significant difference in their well-being.

Ask Important Questions

Holidays provide a natural moment to talk about health in a supportive and caring environment. Important discussions that lead to better health can come from simple questions like:
  • Have you had your annual checkup?
  • How are you feeling emotionally and mentally?
  • Did you get your flu shot or COVID booster this year?
These prompts express care and help ensure that health is front and center as we head into 2025.

Importance of Having a Primary Care Physician

A primary care physician plays a crucial role in managing overall health, acting as a guide for preventive care and addressing ongoing health issues. Regular checkups can catch potential health problems early and help prevent small issues from becoming major concerns.
Remind your loved ones to schedule their routine health checkup. Online search tools are available to find a doctor if they don’t have a regular primary care physician.

Caring for Mental Health During the Holidays

Mental health is just as important as physical health, especially during the holiday season, which can bring its own challenges.
Ask loved ones how they’re doing mentally and emotionally. Offer a listening ear and remind them that it’s always okay to ask for help.
It’s critically important to be aware of the risk factors for mental health crises, including the warning signs of suicide. If someone is struggling, encourage them to reach out for help.

Get Vaccinated to Protect Yourself and Others

Staying up to date on vaccinations is a simple yet effective way to prevent the spread of the flu and COVID-19.
Vaccines.gov can help you find nearby locations for both flu shots and COVID boosters.

With the holidays also comes the Annual Enrollment Period, when you can review your health insurance options. BCBSM offers high-quality, affordable plans to meet the needs of you and your family.
