On Saturday September 14, employees of The Blues lead the way during the American Diabetes Association’s Step Out Walk to Stop Diabetes held at the Detroit Zoo. A total of 40,000 walkers assembled into 400 teams raised approximately $400,000 in the fight against diabetes. The Blues were a major contributor to that total with over $80,000 in funds raised, far exceeding the original corporate target of $50,000. BCBSM is the 2013 statewide gold corporate sponsor for the walk held at the zoo, as well as the Step Out walk in Grand Rapids next month. Daniel J. Loepp, President and CEO of BCBSM, was the 2013 corporate recruitment chair for the ADA’s Detroit walk. Speaking at a rally held before the walk, he praised all of the participants for their efforts in fighting and preventing diabetes. “This is a deadly serious disease, but by working together we can put a stop to this killer and make a difference,” Loepp said. Loepp also thanked the UAW for their partnership with the Blues in putting on the annual event. A second Step Out walk will be held in Grand Rapids on October 15. Jeff Connolly, vice president BCBSM, and President West Michigan Operations and Managed Care is the recruitment chair for this event. Registration is still open for the event, so there is time for you to particpate. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urH4n9iZe0A&feature=youtu.be
