With the holidays quickly approaching, Christmas light aficionados are getting ready for their annual fix of decorated homes, illuminated roadways, and festooned shopping destinations. Few things are as exciting for this crowd, which I am a happy part of, quite like a festive Christmas tree lighting. This presents a unique challenge for the staff at Downtown Lansing Inc., how to you cater to the enthusiasts and while making the event that is fun for everyone? They have answered by making sure the 29th Silver Bells in the City has everything from a fun run, a visually stunning parade, shopping galore, music in all corners of downtown and a fireworks show that wraps around the tree lighting. Kicking off the evening’s events is the Silver Bells Fun Run, sponsored by the Michigan Blues. This run is all about fun, with prizes for the best costumes instead of where you finish. People of all experience levels are encouraged to participate; all you need to do is register for the run before November 22. For more about the evening’s festivities, we talked with the marketing and events director for Playmakers of Okemos, Michelle Phillipich, about what you can expect at the fun run sponsored by the Blues, and received tips from Cathleen Edgerly, communications and marketing manager for Downtown Lansing Inc. about making sure you have a memorable evening in the capital city. Among the suggestions for making sure your trip to downtown Lansing is a fun one, keep in mind:
- Parking is free in all City of Lansing owned parking decks after 5pm.
- Rides on CATA along the Silver Bells in the City route are 50 cents (please have exact change ready).
