Detroit Welcomes the 110th NAACP Annual Convention

The NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) is the largest and oldest civil rights organization in the United States. For more than a century, it’s fought for the fair and equal treatment of the nation’s most marginalized groups. This year, Detroit is hosting one of the historic institution’s biggest events.

The Annual NAACP Convention brings activists, authors, community members, local and national leaders to the Motor City. Attendees will see some of the most prominent and influential voices in politics, media and social justice. Scheduled speakers include presidential hopefuls Senator Cory Booker and Mayor Pete Buttigieg, as well as Former Georgia House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams. There’s also the 2019 Authors' Pavilion, which allows visitors to meet and interact with their favorite writers. This year’s talent consists of veteran journalist April Ryan and fashion designer/Harlem legend, Daniel “Dapper Dan” Day. The event will include autograph signings, book readings and panel discussions. The NAACP Experience, now entering its 50th year, is arguably the most popular attraction. It’s full of interactive exhibits that are free and open to the public. There’s also a diversity career fair that will feature recruiters from top companies such as Apple, the American Heart Association, and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan - a local sponsor of the NAACP’s Detroit branch's push to bring the national event to town. Movie buffs won’t want to miss the Hollywood Bureau Screening Series that starts with The Birth of a Movement, a documentary examining the cause and effect of racist stereotypes in film. There’s also Amazing Grace, which follows the 1972 recording of Aretha Franklin’s classic album of the same name. Other offerings include Brian Banks, a biopic centering on a high school football star wrongly convicted of a crime. And Windows on the World, a coming-of-age drama about a Mexican family dealing with the aftermath of Sept. 11. These are just some of the many activities available at this year’s convention.
