Continuing Detroit's Positive Momentum

It's no question the revitalization of the City of Detroit has been building for years.
Although there is still work to be done, the conversation at the recent Pancakes and Politics event at the Detroit Athletic Club highlighted how business and civic leaders can work together to continue the positive momentum. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan President and CEO Daniel J. Loepp participated in a panel discussion at the event on the revitalization of the Detroit region. Also seated on the panel were Detroit Mayor Michael Duggan, Palace Sports and Entertainment Vice Chairman Arn Tellem and Wayne County Executive Warren Evans. The spirited discussion kicked off with the topic of Major League Soccer possibly coming to Detroit. Questions also focused heavily on the critical need for fixing long-standing issues with the Detroit education system. Despite challenges surrounding these issues, the collaboration of public and private partners across the city has continued to help propel Detroit forward. "As a major employer downtown, the difference between seven or eight years ago is inspiring," said Loepp, who has served as president and CEO for the last 10 years. Blue Cross moved 3,400 employees to the central business district in downtown Detroit in 2011-2012. Loepp also discussed how the company's talent acquisition efforts have benefited from more candidates wanting to come to Detroit. "Recruiting top talent has changed. Detroit has a lot to offer, and a lot of people are interested," said Loepp. Click here to watch a video of the discussion from CBS 62.
