Blue Cross a Sponsor for Detroit’s QLINE Street Car System, Opening May 12

All aboard Detroit’s new street car system the QLINE. On Friday, May 12, the QLINE will celebrate its grand opening with a special media event at its Penske Technical Center, followed by an inaugural first-ride down Woodward Avenue. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is sponsoring two stations in Campus Martius park; one to serve southbound travel and one to serve northbound. “The QLINE is another great example of what can be accomplished through partnership between business, civic and community leadership in Detroit. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is very proud of the important role it played in taking this from concept to reality,” said Tricia Keith, executive vice president, Chief of Staff and Corporate Secretary. Detroit's much-anticipated streetcar will open to the public on Friday evening with free rides through Sunday. Be sure to look for promotions from businesses along the Woodward corridor as part of the grand opening celebrations. “The QLINE opens up more opportunities to showcase Detroit as a world-class center for dining, sporting events, entertainment and health care. It provides greater access to employment opportunities in the city and makes it more welcoming, enjoyable and easier to live, work and play in Detroit,” said Keith.
QLINE Fast Facts
- The rail runs 3.3 miles along Woodward Avenue, from Grand Boulevard to Congress. The cars will travel a maximum speed of 30 m.p.h., and stop for traffic lights.
- The QLINE has 12 stops and will run 22-25 minutes from end-to-end.
- Blue Cross, Chevrolet, Detroit Medical Center and Henry Ford Health System are among the station sponsors.
- The QLINE will operate 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 6 a.m. to midnight Friday; 8 a.m. to midnight Saturday; and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.
- The cars are 66 feet long and can carry 125 passengers on average. Free Wi-Fi is available.
- Walk-up fares are $1.50 and will be good for three hours. For seniors, the cost is 75 cents. Day passes are available for $3, and frequent users can pay $30 for monthly passes, and $285 for an annual pass.
