The painful events of 2020 made it clear that racial injustice and health disparities continue to persist in our society and that many deep wounds remain unhealed. As I shared last year, to move forward we all need to commit to driving continued change through respect, empathy and gaining diverse perspectives to better comprehend the unique experiences of each other. At Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan this meant immediately and intentionally bringing together our colleagues to acknowledge what was happening in our communities and then reiterating our deep commitment to inclusion and diversity. We also brought together our employees to share stories and listen to and learn from one another. Our inclusive culture, which is the cornerstone of our organization’s culture, provided the foundation for the open sharing of real-life experiences and perspectives. Our annual Inclusion and Diversity report reflects our commitment to fostering diversity, inclusion, equality and equity at work, at home and in our communities. Undoubtedly, plenty of work remains to achieve equality for all. As the President and CEO of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, I assure those we serve and work with that inclusion and diversity will continue to be key tenets in every aspect of our organization and we will remain laser-focused on striving to break down racial and social barriers and build up healthy communities where everyone can thrive. I encourage you to review our work, look inside your organizations and help recognize the humanity in each of us. Daniel J. Loepp is president and CEO of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.
