GRAND RAPIDS, April 21, 2026 — Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan today announced it will be relocating approximately 130 employees from its suburban Cascade office to its Steketee’s headquarters in downtown Grand Rapids, signifying a major milestone in its ongoing commitment and investment in the city.
“Blue Cross has been a long-time participant in the revitalization of downtown Grand Rapids through our investment in Steketee’s and bringing teams together under one roof builds on that commitment,” said Joe Hune, vice president and president, West Michigan and Upper Peninsula, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. “This strategic move improves building utilization, strengthens collaboration and team dynamics and further reaffirms our commitment to the city of Grand Rapids.”
Blue Cross unveiled these new changes at a press conference Tuesday alongside Mayor David LaGrand and local business leaders.
“The vibrancy of Grand Rapids depends on the people who live, work and spend time here every day. When organizations like Blue Cross make decisions to bring more employees into the heart of the city, it strengthens our economy, supports local businesses and enhances the overall energy of our community. This kind of commitment helps ensure that Grand Rapids remains a place where businesses thrive and people want to be,” said Mayor LaGrand.
"It's exciting to see companies continue to invest and grow," said Randy Thelen, President & CEO of The Right Place. "Blue Cross is not only investing in its own future, it’s contributing to the continued vitality of Greater Grand Rapids. The Company and their employees are part of the fabric of the community. They’re visiting local restaurants, shopping at nearby stores, and staying in local hotels. All of this helps make our region that much stronger.”
This facility transition is part of broader transformation efforts and a focus on operational efficiency. As such, Blue Cross has decided to close the Cascade office this year. Renovations will begin in May at Steketee’s office to make room for the additional head count and team members from the Cascade office will officially join their colleagues in September, bringing the total headcount in Steketee’s to just over 400 employees.
