Blue Cross Utilizes Preferred Pharmacy to Manage Specialty Prescription Drug Costs

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan has moved to a preferred pharmacy for specialty drugs for most commercial members.
As of Jan. 1, 2026, Blue Cross members with PPO self-funded commercial group coverage will fill their specialty drug prescriptions through Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy for home delivery or at Walgreens retail pharmacy stores.
This is one of the solutions we’ve developed to help customers manage the rising prescription drug costs and make health care more affordable. This change is expected to save these customers and members on their annual spending on specialty drug claims.
The Exclusive Specialty Network offers:
- Access to a comprehensive list of specialty medications through home delivery or retail pharmacy pickup.
- Discounts for each drug.
- Care coordinators who work with members and Blue Cross care management programs.
- 24/7 access to pharmacists and nurses for consultation.
This move has been underway for the past six years as Blue Cross moved other commercial pharmacy plan customers to the Exclusive Specialty Network in 2019, 2020 and 2021. Now, all commercial pharmacy plan customers are aligned on the exclusive specialty program.
