Traditionally, the relationship between health insurance companies and physicians was contentious. As health care costs climbed upward, fingers were often pointed toward one another, leaving patients stuck in the middle. The pressure to begin controlling costs led to the idea of a patient-centered medical home (PCMH), and as the idea transitions into practice, the benefits are clear. As Dr. David Share, BCBSM senior vice president of Value Partnerships, notes the first step toward putting the idea into practice started with the realization that forcing doctors would not work. Instead, respectful collaboration has resulted in BCBSM leading the nation in the number of physicians adopting the PCMH model. In this podcast, Dr. Share explains how this collaboration began.
