Blue Cross Partners with Walgreens to Make Prescription Disposal Easy

6.4 million Americans abused controlled prescription drugs last year, and many of those users obtained them from family, friends or other’s home medicine cabinets. National Prescription Drug Take Back Day aims to prevent drug addiction and overdose deaths by providing designated locations to safely dispose of unused or expired prescriptions. Unfortunately, there are a lot of myths and misconceptions about the right way to get rid of unwanted medications. Crushing and flushing pills may prevent theft, but these methods can also pollute the environment and pose harm to those handling the trash, including pets with an affinity for garbage bags. Contrary to popular belief, it’s also best to avoid dumping old medicines in the trash, even if mixed with household deterrents. These practices can increase exposure to potentially hazardous drugs. Proper disposal doesn’t have to be difficult or dangerous. Blue Cross and Walgreens have partnered to make safe disposal easy. You can now dispose of unused prescriptions at certain Walgreens locations around the state — drop them off in the same place you picked them up! All you need to do is take your unused or expired prescriptions to one of these Blue Cross-sponsored drop-off locations for safe disposal all year round:
