Coming to the conclusion that your parents are no longer able to independently care for themselves is difficult for anyone. Having to relocate them from halfway across the country makes that even more stressful. Now imagine managing that transition in the midst a pandemic that has locked the country down and changed your way of life for the foreseeable future. That’s exactly what happened to Donna Miriani.
The Troy, Michigan, resident moved her parents from New Jersey to an assisted living facility in Michigan just months before the onset of the pandemic. Once the pandemic hit, managing their transition from independent life to needing frequent care in a state of lockdown become more complex and stressful. Despite living in a community that did its best to keep its residents safe, the virus eventually made its way in and both of Donna’s parents became infected. Fortunately, her parents were able to fend off the virus and recover. Once the vaccines became available in early 2021, the were eager to get theirs. Donna, who had COVID herself was also excited. Each vaccination appointment was a small celebration of being closer to a return to normal life and the good fortune of family. While she understands that the side effects can be daunting to some, she “wanted to be a part of the solution not the problem.” Her advice to others: “Get a shot.”
