As of 2016, there have been more than 2.8 million women with a history of breast cancer in the U.S. alone. October is recognized as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month to increase understanding of the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women next to skin cancer. With the busy holiday season just around the corner, it’s important to take advantage of opportunities to educate yourself, understand methods of prevention and schedule annual screenings. Hayes Green Beach Memorial Hospital (HGB) invites the public to celebrate breast cancer awareness month on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at a free community open house in its Breast Care Center from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. Information about services and resources will be provided, along with the opportunity to meet Dr. Troy Ferguson, the medical director of the Breast Care Center, Dr. David Rawson, HGB radiologist, and Loni Allaire, R.N., the nurse navigator in the Breast Care Center. Guests can enjoy refreshments, tours, chair massages and even schedule annual mammograms at the event. Additionally, the Women’s Health Experience is a free event sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan that will take place on Saturday, Nov. 19 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at AL!VE in Charlotte, Mich. While breast health is certainly a topic we cover at the event, it's not only about breast cancer awareness. This experience gives guests a chance to learn, socialize and be pampered with their loved ones prior to the hustle and bustle of the holidays. Throughout the day, guests will have the opportunity to speak one-on-one with clinicians about important women’s health topics including 3-D mammography, breast health, skin care, bone health, bladder health and more. The event will also offer the following:
- A chance to visit the Playmakers Satellite Store for discounts and prize drawings, as well as a free gait analysis and shoe fitting
- A free boxed lunch from NOURISH by The Big Salad
- Interactive booths featuring health information and screenings, holiday decoration and baking, fitness, cooking demonstrations and more
- Wine tasting with the president of the Tasters Guild of Lansing
- Door prizes and prize drawings (must be present to win)
- Free childcare for children ages two and up—pre-register by calling 517-541-5803.
