IT Interns Make Their Mark on Detroit

Looking for an internship in a rapidly growing tech hub? According to the Anderson Economic Group, your calling may not be in New York or Silicon Valley. Automation Alley’s Technology Industry Report benchmarks Southeast Michigan against 14 other high-tech hubs across America. From the results, it’s clear that Detroit is quickly becoming the place to be for aspiring IT professionals. “You have a technology industry in Metro Detroit that is the equal to all of Silicon Valley in terms of jobs, number of employers and the number of occupations identified,” said Patrick Anderson, principal at Anderson Economic Group, in an interview with the Detroit News. Those outside the city may be surprised by who takes the title as one of the state’s largest IT employers: Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. One in seven of our employees works in IT, using technology to improve the health and lives of people everywhere. While Blue Cross takes on almost 200 interns across 60 departments, the IT department itself recruits 20 interns every summer, and more than 50 total interns throughout the entire year. IT interns are given interactive projects that enable them to learn, with large impact roles on a team that is leading Michigan through a period of rapid changes in both health care and technology. In addition to gaining real-world experience, IT interns at Blue Cross have opportunities to collaborate with interns across all departments on multidisciplinary projects that improve Blue Cross as a company.
